The top 5 reasons why you MUST spend more time choosing your real estate agent:

1.  This is the largest transaction of your life

Often, even 1% can amount to a difference of up to $10K or more. With such large numbers at stake, can you really afford not to have an expert by your side?

2.  Real estate transactions are very complex

You are going to encounter issues of finance, law, tax, title and contract. Navigating all of these areas takes local knowledge and transactional experience. The last thing you want is to find yourself in a position where missing something small costs you big.

3.  It's a lengthy process

Buying or selling a home can take 6 months or more. You should feel comfortable with your agent, because you will be spending a lot of time together. If things turn south, straining an existing relationship may just be too difficult to bear.

4.  Your personal finances are on the line

Your agent often sees your entire financial picture, including your net worth. The individual representing you must be trustworthy, and someone that handles that information with care and professionalism.

5.  Not all agents are created equal

Just like lawyers and doctors, real estate agents can be specialists too. There are buy side agents and sell side agents, ones who specialize in investment properties and others that solely represent vacation homes. Just because someone is a licensed agent, does not mean that they are the right fit for your transaction.

The Bottom Line

You wouldn't hire an employee without an interview so why would you hire an agent without one? When hiring a real estate agent, make sure you ask the right questions and get it right the first time.
